In seiner Abhandlung 'Die Natur des Guten' präsentiert Augustinus die Quintessenz seiner Auseinandersetzung mit dem Manichäismus, einer spätantiken Weltreligion, der er selbst angehangen hatte. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Debatte steht die Frage, ob unsere Erfahrung des Bösen zeigt, dass es in der Welt Dinge gibt, die ihrem Wesen nach schlecht sind; und ob daher mit den Manichäern neben dem guten, göttlichen Prinzip ein zweites, böses Prinzip anzunehmen ist. Dabei geht Augustinus so detailliert auf den manichäischen Mythos ein, dass seine Schrift eine der wichtigsten Quellen für die Mythologie der Manichäer darstellt. Zugleich legt er in komprimierter Form seine ausgereifte Metaphysik des Guten und des Bösen dar. Das macht dieses Werk zu einer geeigneten Einführung in die Fundamente augustinischer Weltanschauung und Ontologie. Die Ausgabe bietet neben Originaltext, Neuübersetzung und Einzelkommentierung eine umfangreiche historsich-systematische Einleitung. Der Brief des Manichäers Secundinus, auf den Augustin mit seiner Schrift 'Gegen den Manichäer Secundinus' reagiert, ist eine der wichtigsten Quellen für den Manichäismus in Rom. Secundinus versucht darin, Augustinus für den Manichäismus zurückzugewinnen. In seiner Antwort bestreitet Augus-tinus den Manichäern ihren Anspruch, die Bibel richtig zu deuten. Zugleich wird Augustins genaue Kenntnis der manichäischen Mythologie wie Theo-logie deutlich. Die Ausgabe bietet einen kritisch revidierten Text, eine Neuübersetzung, eine historische Einleitung sowie eine Kommentierung des Briefes des Secundinus und die Antwort Augustins.

This volume reproduces nineteen chapters and articles published between 1991 through 2008, on Manichaeism, and its contacts with Augustine of Hippo, its most famous convert and also best-known adversary. The contents are divided into four parts: perceptions of Mani within the Roman Empire, select aspects of Manichaean thought, women in Manichaeism, and Manichaeism and Augustine. Though these chapters and articles reproduce their originals, adjustments have been made to include cross-referencing, newer editions, and the like, all with the aim of rendering them more accessible to a new readership among those who follow the fortunes of Mani’s religion in the Roman Empire and/or the “Manichaean” aspects of Augustine of Hippo.
